It's a basic supplementary service given along with the connection so, now there is no chance of missing an important call while you are on the phone! If you are online with party B and party C calls you
You will get to know that C is calling (C waiting will be shown on screen) and you will get a chance to swap your calls
In case you don't accept the call from C and after the call with B is over, you will get a missed call from C whom you can call later.
While dialing your number, C will not get you as busy.
